Systems, Not Styles

A style guide describes what exists. A system explains why.

Most brand documents we inherit are records, not tools — a snapshot of decisions with no reasoning attached. The moment a new designer, a new agency or an in-house team touches the brand, the guide runs out of answers.

What a system actually needs to hold

  • The relationship between elements, not just each element alone
  • Rules for what changes across contexts, and what never does
  • Enough logic that a stranger can extend it correctly without asking

If you can't hand it to someone who's never met you and get a correct result, it isn't a system yet.

This is the difference between a brand that survives a designer leaving, and one that quietly drifts back to generic within a year.
